My name is Jessica Madsen and I am honored to be serving in the role as principal of Elm Street School. I currently reside in Raymond, Maine with my husband and two daughters. I graduated from Gordon College in 2000 with a double major in Psychology and Recreation and Leisure Studies. I went on to earn my Master’s Degree from the University of Southern Maine in special education, while working as an Educational Technician at Gorham Middle School.  I have spent the past eleven years working at Whittier Middle School. I was hired initially as a special education teacher before moving into the role as the Dean of Students. I truly enjoyed my time at Whittier and through the past 11 years, I have become very dedicated to the students we serve in RSU 16. That said, I am excited to begin my journey here at Elm Street School and look forward to meeting each of our students and their families.

Having spent time meeting with our returning staff and getting to know the new staff, I have begun developing areas of priority as I begin this journey as the new principal. In sharing what I have learned about ESS with my leadership team, we have begun the work of identifying ways to improve our Response to Intervention Structure to help target early interventions for students. An integral component of RTI will be providing supports and structures that allows each student to learn and to reach their full potential. It is essential that our students are given the tools they need in order to become lifelong learners. In addition to RTI, our school will be looking to build additional structures to address student behavior and attendance. We will also be working hard to ensure that our classrooms are welcoming, engaging centers of learning based upon strong community building that are committed to student learning and growth.

Parents, guardians, caregivers and families are an important part of the Elm Street Community and it is important that you are a part of the development of our vision and goals for ESS. We are a team, and you are an important part of our team. I look forward to meeting with each of you, whether it is informally as you come to pick up, or drop of your child, or more formally through school-wide events. In addition, I am always willing to meet with families as well. Feel free to reach out via e-mail to jmadsen@rsu16.org or call the main office at (207) 345-3381 to schedule a time to meet. I will always strive to be an open, honest, and fair leader.  It truly is an honor to be selected as the new principal and I am looking forward to accomplishing great things at ESS together. I truly believe it takes a team to help our students be successful and I am thankful to be joining your child’s team. #TeamESS
