From the Principal - Poland Community School

Richard A. Benioit, Principal

I have had the honor of being Principal at Poland Community School since 2012.  I grew up in Brunswick, Maine and attended the University of Maine at Orono, where I graduated in 1992. I spent 18 years at Oxford Hills Middle School where I taught both 7th and 8th grade.  I earned my Master’s degree from the University of Maine in 2000 and my Certificate of Advanced Studies from the University of Southern Maine in 2008.  I was principal for one year at East Grand School before returning to the area.  I love the work I do, the students and staff I work with, and the community I serve.

Principal's Message

Our motto “Doing what’s best for kids” drives all of our decision making.  We work hard to provide programs and opportunities that enhance the learning experience for every child and meet their behavioral, social-emotional and academic needs.

Our teachers participate in professional development every Wednesday afternoon when our students are dismissed an hour early, which helps us to provide common, cohesive learning targets for our students.  Our School Counselor and Social Worker use this time to collaborate on services including both classroom lessons and individual supports for students.

We utilize the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework to reinforce the school-wide expectations to be safe, be respectful and be responsible.  We recognize our students for exemplary behavior through both individual and group rewards, and our students are doing an amazing job every day!
Our community is not only a support for the school, it drives much of our learning.  We collaborate with the Fire Department, Recreation Department and Town Office to provide learning experiences and volunteer opportunities that focus on the growth of the whole child.  We are grateful for all the community does for our students and are proud to give back to the town whenever possible.

We could not provide many of the learning opportunities that supplement the classroom studies without the support of our PTA.  They provide financial supports that allow us to provide at least one off-site learning experience for every student in our school each year.

The staff here at PCS are happy to serve the students and families of Poland, and proud to be members of such a supportive community!
