Counselor's Corner

Yearly Events:

Suicide Prevention to all Students

Every year we do a training with our students on suicide prevention. All students learn the warning signs of suicide and steps to take to help themselves or someone else. 7th grade focuses more on coping with stress and 8th grade focuses more on the signs of depression. Both lessons have been approved by the state of Maine.

7th Grade Career Fair

The Androscoggin Middle School Counselors in conjunction with Central Maine Community College put on a career fair for all Androscoggin 7th graders in March. Students sign up for 3 careers they wish to learn more about. This is a great opportunity for them to learn more about future careers. The fair takes place at Central Maine Community College

8th Grade Aspirations Trip

Whittier 8th grade students participate in lessons about post-secondary options.  Once they have knowledge of their options, they are able to   choose between LRTC, Lewiston Regional Technical Center, a 2- year college and a 4 -year college to visit. This is a field trip we take in May.

Transition

Being in the “Middle” the school counselor and admin work closely with the elementary schools and the high school to provide our students a smooth transition.

6th-7th grade transition begins in April. The principal visits the students at each school, and then the school counselor brings 7th grade students to visit all the 6th graders.  We also work to include small transition lunch groups for students that need a little extra time visiting Whittier. All 6th grade students attend Whittier Step Up Day in June. We host a Parent Step Up night as well.

8th-9th grade transition begins in the fall, with weekly transition groups with the school counselor and both the PRHS social workers. This is a nice way for our students to meet someone and have a familiar face when they arrive as 9th graders.  In March, 8th grade students will begin to select their 9th grade electives and a parent night will be held.  All 8th grade students will attend Step Up Day in June.
