The Department of Education, along with independent researchers and law enforcement, has found that relying solely on only lockdown procedures is no longer sufficient for ensuring safety in our schools. Society needs to change its viewpoint on safety. Our research here at RSU 16 has brought us to the conclusion that implementing ALICE options-based strategies can improve chances of survival in emergency scenarios. Many schools in Maine and across the country have embraced ALICE strategies, and this training allows us to follow federally suggested guidelines.

During the summer of 2024, many administrators from RSU 16 participated in training to become certified as trainers in the ALICE program. This preparation will help us launch the program district-wide. As the ALICE administrative team finalizes the deployment process, you will soon receive more information and invitations to parent forums about ALICE and our new approach to enhancing safety in our schools.
