Cadet Program

The first meeting of the Cadet Program including Poland Regional High School Students took place June 19th at the Auburn Police Department. We had eleven students and several parents attend to learn what program involves. Students were transported to the Central Maine Community College Campus and allowed to see and experience the latest technology used to train criminal justice students and police officers.

Cadets accepted into the program will be scheduled to take part in a ride along. First,  with a Sheriff’s Deputy starting this summer and later in the year with an Auburn Police Officer, to experience the differences in rural versus urban law enforcement.

Cadets will also be able to meet members of other law enforcement who will present their experiences and purpose in protecting the public. For example we are in the process of lining up U.S.Customs and Border Protection Airwing Unit to land at the Auburn Airport to meet with students and answer questions. Students will get an up close look at one of the helicopters and its technology used to patrol the borders of the United States. An officer from Pan Am Railways Police Department will come in to explain his role in protecting the rail lines throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. A tour of the Androscoggin County Jail and learn how officers maintain prisoners housed at the facility and the many challenges they experience. A tour of the Maine State Police Crime lab and how evidence is processed. A K-9 demonstration and how dogs are chosen, trained and used in the many branches of law enforcement. Computer Crime Detectives will come in and show students what there job involves and how they collect evidence to prosecute violators. A prosecutor from the District Attorney’s Office to explain their role in prosecuting criminal cases produced by the many branches of law enforcement.
