Technology in Grades PreK - 12

All students in PreK through grades 12 have been issued a Chromebook and a school Google account. This account and their Google Drive stays with them from PreK all the way to graduation. They can take the contents of their Google Drive with them when they graduate.

At RSU 16 we use Chromebooks for Students for some of the reasons below:

Cost-Effectiveness:

  • Lower Purchase Price: Chromebooks are generally less expensive than traditional laptops or tablets. Some reports indicate they can cost significantly less, potentially half the price of comparable devices.
  • Reduced Long-Term Costs:
    • Lower Maintenance: With fewer moving parts and cloud-based software, Chromebooks tend to have fewer mechanical malfunctions, leading to lower repair costs.
    • Automatic Updates: The Chrome OS automatically updates, reducing the IT department's workload and eliminating the need for manual software updates and associated costs.
    • Built-in Security: Chromebooks have integrated virus protection, potentially saving the district money on third-party antivirus software and IT troubleshooting related to malware.
    • Extended Lifespan: Some studies suggest Chromebooks can last longer than traditional devices due to their stable hardware requirements and cloud-based nature.
    • Lower Total Cost of Ownership: Over a few years, the total cost of owning and operating Chromebooks, including purchase price, management, and maintenance, can be significantly lower compared to other devices

Ease of Management:

  • Centralized Management: The Google Admin Console allows IT administrators to easily manage and control all Chromebook devices across the district from a single interface. This includes configuring settings, deploying apps, and managing user access.
  • Simplified Deployment: Chromebooks can be deployed much faster than traditional devices as they don't require individual device imaging and custom setup.
  • Reduced IT Burden: Automation of updates and easier troubleshooting can significantly reduce the time IT staff spends on device management and repair, freeing them up for more strategic tasks.
  • Integration with Google Workspace for Education: Seamless integration with Google's suite of educational tools (like Google Classroom, Docs, Sheets, etc.) simplifies workflows for teachers and students.

Enhanced Learning Environment:

  • Focus on Learning: Chromebooks are designed for productivity and collaboration, with fewer distractions compared to traditional laptops.
  • Cloud-Based Accessibility: Students can access their files and learning materials from any Chromebook with their school-managed Google account, promoting flexibility and continuity.
  • Collaboration: Tools like Google Docs and Slides allow for real-time collaboration among students.
  • Accessibility Features: Chrome OS has built-in accessibility features that can benefit all learners, including those with special education needs.
  • Improved Student Engagement: Research suggests that incorporating Chromebooks into lessons can increase student engagement and motivation.
  • Development of Digital Literacy Skills: Regular use of Chromebooks helps students develop essential digital literacy skills needed for future success.

Security:

  • Automatic Security Updates: Chromebooks receive regular security updates, keeping them protected against the latest threats.
  • Sandboxing: Each app and webpage runs in its isolated environment, preventing malware from spreading to other parts of the system.
  • Verified Boot: This feature ensures that the operating system hasn't been tampered with during startup.
  • Data Encryption: User data is encrypted to protect privacy.
  • Resistance to Ransomware: Due to their security features, Chromebooks are less susceptible to ransomware attacks.
